A friend introduced me to the energy centers known as chakras1 half a lifetime ago. I wish I had acted on her input sooner.

Fortunately, my body guided me to the help I needed at the time — DIRT.

My root chakra loves the garden. Also known as the base chakra and represented by the color red, this chakra operates at the base of the spine. Connection to the earth grounds and stabilizes the root chakra.

In the article “The Ancient Wisdom of the Chakra System,” Piedmont Healthcare reinforces the root chakra’s role: “Considered the foundation for life; provides a sense of stability and security; helps you feel grounded.”

Conversely, when my root chakra is out of balance, the first sign is overworking, usually due to underlying feelings of not being enough.
