Ease and simplicity … an approach for all things
My need for ease and simplicity has increased considerably in recent weeks, influenced by the awareness that all things involving effort and complexity are intensely difficult while grieving.
I’ve noticed that my decision-maker is slow sometimes.1
I’ve noticed that even the ease and simplicity I had built into my life and my work have more complexity than needed.
I’ve noticed that grief is teaching me the value of slowing some things down so other things have an opportunity to reset their pace.
So much
Aunt Linda passed away one month ago. Still, I have so much sadness and regret to process. I need quiet time to reflect, yet time feels elusive. Each day, the demands of life and the devastating happenings in the news pull at my focus. I know I need to adapt to move toward ease and simplicity … but how?
So elusive
Many times, while outside in our yard, I notice movement in the woods and see a gray fox … only for a moment … then the beautiful, camouflaged animal seemingly vanishes.
One time, I heard the sound of leaves as a gray fox ran across the forest floor and then the sound stopped as if the animal disappeared (maybe in a den?).
Another time, I thought I saw a gray fox, then heard it climbing up a tree. Puzzled, I concluded it must have been a massive squirrel.
Today, after seeing foxes in unexpected ways (including hearing one last night from our back porch), I did some research and learned that gray fox2 is the only native fox in North Carolina and 🤯 they climb trees!
No wonder they’re so elusive and move out of sight so quickly. Gray fox has curved nails and semi-retractable claws, both helpful for climbing trees when escaping from predators and sourcing food IN THE TREES because (another 🤯 fact) they’re omnivores!3
So, it was not a Squirrel Of Unusual Size (SOUS) that climbed the tree, but a grey fox climbing with the ease of a squirrel. So very cool.
So … how does all this fit together?
Many cultures look to animals for insight and, today, I understand the message that fox is bringing to my attention:
I have everything I need to adapt to the situations before me … I need only to step away and view from a distance to see my refined “ease and simplicity path” clearly.
Using a practice known as “animal medicine,” wisdom and support is gained from animals through observation of animal behavior (such as climbing trees), key characteristics (such as curved claws and camouflaged fur coloring), and shamanic tradition which, in fox’s case, includes cleverness, adaptability and agility.
My approach to animal medicine is to first ask the animal to help me understand their message, then research the animal’s medicine in shamanic literature. One of my favorite, go-to references —The Shaman’s Guide to Power Animals by Lori Morrison — provides reassurance today that my message from fox is in alignment with shamanic tradition. The book offers the following “Shaman’s Intention” for working with fox energy:
Give me confidence that all the skills I need are at my disposal.4
Thank you, gray fox, for helping me step away and see the ease and simplicity path more clearly (refer to announcement below).
FYI re: Animal Medicine in general
As I write, I see a bright yellow butterfly, hear the distant call of a neighbor’s rooster, and watch a skink scurry across the porch. Not all of nature’s encounters indicate a message is meant for me. When the encounter happens three times, in an unexpected way, and/or the animal and I make direct eye contact, I wonder if the animal is offering me guidance / animal medicine.
For example, a visit from a red cardinal is often considered a message of comfort, connection and love from a deceased loved one, as described in the Kacey Musgraves song, Cardinal.5
Knowing that I have bird feeders on my porch to attract birds, I do not assume each cardinal is bringing me a message. However, a few years ago while my cousin6 and I were walking from our lodging to a session at the Longleaf Writers Conference,7 a bright red cardinal made such an effort to establish eye contact with me that my cousin said something like, “Lori, would you please notice the cardinal who is trying to get your attention? He needs to deliver a message from Baba and you’re being difficult.”

My cousin’s voice echos in my memory: you’re being difficult.
Is it serendipity that her cheeky humor in 2023 fills the gap in my ease and simplicity puzzle today?
Let’s make the connection even simpler.
Reiki energy is universal life force energy. It feels like loving kindness. It soothes and heals and relaxes. It’s never ever difficult.
When Reiki Recharge™ launched to paid subscribers in January 2025, the unique subscription model made weekly distance Reiki services effortless and affordable.
One subscriber remarked, “I’d experienced Reiki and I’m familiar with subscriptions, but I’d never before heard of connecting to Reiki by subscription!”
Even so, aspects of the subscription model felt confusing at times, and many asked questions like … if I don’t read the Reiki email message will it still work for me? Is the Reiki only good for the one weekday or can I read the message daily and receive daily? Can I customize the day that Reiki is transmitted to me?
Nearly all questions and feedback fell into a theme of “I would like more control over my Reiki experience.” One person summed it up with “Can we do Reiki on-demand?” (I visualized a TV remote control in the person’s hand as I considered their question.)
Let’s narrow down the changes and gather more feedback as we roll.
I have been noodling on subscriber input for around two months and … for simplicity and ease … upcoming Old Grateful changes will address the following questions:
Is there a flexible design for paid subscribers who desire simple, on-demand “sips” of Reiki when desired and also for those who’d rather the ease of allowing Reiki to reach them when they need it the most?
Can I book a Reiki session for my animals? For myself (when I need a full reset)? For family?
If I’m not a paid subscriber, is there a pay-as-you-go option?
Yes. See announcement below (for #1) and stay tuned for flexible pricing re: #2 and #3.

“My decision-maker is slow” is a remark borrowed from a dear friend, Marilyn. She said this a few times while we were organizing her kitchen, and I get it … sometimes questions come at us too quickly. Even so, she was crystal clear with her decision when I tried to throw away an old sponge!

I imagine our local foxes are eating well this year because the acorns falling from the trees are MASSIVE.

When I hear the song, Cardinal (link above), I think of Baba.
